What is The Webster Technique?
Chiropractic adjustments correct subluxations, or misalignments in the spine, that disrupt the proper performance of the nervous system. These disruptions diminish an individual’s ability to function optimally. Pregnant moms are more susceptible to sacral and pelvic subluxations because of increased hormones (relaxin), weight gain, and the associated changes in her posture. The aim of the Webster Technique is to decrease the effects of subluxations in the sacrum and pelvis through a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment, in order to improve neuro-biomechanical functioning to the sacral/pelvic region. Restoring neuro-biomechanical functioning may affect the baby’s spinal and nervous system development, improve the baby’s positioning and birth outcome, prevent dystocia (difficult labor), and relieve general aches and pains in the sacrum and pelvis.
Through the chiropractic and the Webster technique, a mother can achieve optimal functioning of her nervous system, which in turn improves her health and creates conditions for her child to be born with the greatest potential possible.
The benefits of chiropractic treatment (Webster technique) during pregnancy includes:
Reducing labour time and delivery
Since women who receive regular chiropractic care are taking care of their nervous system, many have found their bodies are better prepared to handle the childbirth process. When the nervous system is working properly, the whole body is working as it should be. With this in mind, many women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy have shorter labor and delivery times.
Restoring poor posture
Many women have issues with back pain during pregnancy due to the extra weight they must carry in the front of their body. The protruding abdomen can increase the curve in the back and cause pain and posture issues. Chiropractors can restore proper posture, and prevent the stress of pregnancy on the body from causing long-term pain and dystocia (difficult labor).
Restoring pelvic balance
Pregnant women often have issues with their pelvic balance. All women experience pelvic changes during their pregnancy as they get bigger and the baby develops. When the pelvis is not in line, it can restrict the amount of room that the developing baby has. The aim of the Webster technique is to restore normal movement to the pelvis and sacrum by removing any biomechanical restrictions, allowing the baby space to move and grow.
Controlling pregnancy symptoms
Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce some of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy. Regular chiropractic care can help women maintain their health during pregnancy, relieve joint and neck pain and control the symptoms of nausea.
Promotes fetal well-being
The Webster Technique is helpful in optimizing fetal well-being by promoting natural balance and connectivity.
According to a report published in peer-reviewed Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, with chiropractic manipulation (or Webster Technique), more than 82% breech presentations can be switched to vertex presentation without adding any risk to the pregnancy.
Webster certified chiropractors are highly trained to gently provide adjustments for women who are pregnant. Pregnant women who take the time to visit a chiropractor during their pregnancy will find that their overall pregnancy can be more comfortable and enjoyable as they keep their bodies — and their babies — healthy.
